Product Details
Welcome to Plant&Leaf and our range of family grown plants. The first photo serves as a representative display, showcasing the beauty of a mature plant. The second photo provides a sample of a single plant from the current batch available. Please note the Pot size displayed on the heading of each product.
All of our plants are grown outdoors in nature and are exposed to the natural elements. Sometimes this means a leaf could have been chewed here and there or have a blemish or two – but we do our best to send the best plants we can on every order.
Zingiber malaysianum (a Malaysian wild ginger) is a tropical, rhizomatous plant. Here’s how to grow it successfully:
Climate & Light
-
Climate: Tropical to warm subtropical; prefers warm, humid conditions
-
Temperature: Ideal range 20–32 °C
-
Light: Partial shade is best (bright, filtered light). Avoid harsh direct sun, which can scorch leaves.
Soil
-
Type: Rich, loose, and well-draining soil
-
Best mix: Garden soil + compost + sand or perlite
-
pH: Slightly acidic to neutral (around 6.0–7.0)
Watering
-
Keep soil consistently moist, but not waterlogged
-
Water more often during active growth
-
Reduce watering slightly if growth slows (cooler or drier periods)
Fertiliser
-
Feed every 3–4 weeks during the growing season
-
Use a balanced liquid fertiliser or organic compost
-
Avoid heavy over-fertilizing—gingers prefer steady, gentle feeding
Humidity
-
Likes high humidity
-
In dry areas, mist occasionally or grow near other plants
-
Excellent choice for greenhouses or shaded tropical gardens
Maintenance
-
Remove yellow or dead leaves to prevent disease
-
Mulch to retain moisture and keep roots cool.
Flowering
-
Flowers emerge from the base on separate stalks
-
Healthy plants may take 1–2 years to flower
