All of our plants are grown outdoors in nature and are exposed to the natural elements. Sometimes this means a leaf could have been chewed here and there or have a blemish or two – but we do our best to send the best plants we can on every order.

Taking care of a Zanzibar gem (Zamioculcas zamiifolia) involves several key aspects to ensure its health and longevity:

1. Lighting: Zanzibar gems prefer bright, indirect light. They can tolerate lower light conditions but grow best with filtered sunlight or artificial light. Avoid direct sunlight as it can scorch the leaves.

2. Watering: These plants are drought-tolerant and prefer to dry out between waterings. Water thoroughly when the top few centimeters of soil is dry, allowing excess water to drain away. Avoid waterlogging, as this can lead to root rot.

3. Soil: Use a well-draining potting mix designed for succulents or cacti. A mix that retains some moisture while allowing for good drainage is ideal.

4. Temperature and Humidity: Zanzibar gems thrive in typical indoor temperatures (18-24°C) and moderate humidity. They can tolerate lower humidity levels but appreciate occasional misting, especially in dry indoor environments.

5. Fertilising: Feed with a balanced houseplant fertilizer diluted to half-strength during the growing season (spring and summer). Reduce or stop fertilizing in autumn and winter when growth slows down.

6. Pruning: Trim off any yellow or dead leaves to maintain plant health and appearance.

7. Repotting: Zanzibar gems grow slowly and don’t need frequent repotting. Repot when the plant becomes root-bound, typically every 2-3 years. Choose a pot only slightly larger than the current one to avoid overpotting.

8. Pest Control: These plants are relatively resistant to pests but can occasionally attract spider mites or mealybugs. Inspect regularly and treat any infestations promptly with insecticidal soap or neem oil.
